Tune Out Stress: Using Music to Relax and Recharge

Music is a powerful and accessible tool for shifting your mood and calming your mind. Its ability to improve mental wellbeing is a recognised technique, and you can use it to create your own pocket of peace whenever you need it.

How to Practice Mindful Music Listening

  1. Find Your Sound (There are no rules!) The most important step is choosing music that feels right for you. While some people relax to calming instrumental tracks, you might find your peace in hip-hop, metal, pop, or country. The goal is to connect with the music, so pick an artist or genre you genuinely love.

  2. Create Your Space Find a comfortable spot where you won't be disturbed for a few minutes. Using headphones is a great way to block out distractions and fully immerse yourself in the sound.

  3. Listen with Intention Close your eyes and try to focus only on the music. Notice the different instruments, the rhythm, or the lyrics. If your mind wanders to other thoughts, gently guide your attention back to the sound. This isn't about clearing your mind completely, but about giving it one peaceful thing to focus on.

Binaural Beats and Isochronic Tones

You may want to try Binaural beats and Isochronic tones.

A binaural beat is an effect created by the brain when it hears two tones at slightly different frequencies. Essentially, your brain activity synchronises with the beat, which is known as entrainment or the frequency-following effect, and it can help you to relax, focus, and cope with your emotions through increasing your brain function.

An isochronic tone is similar to a binaural beat in the way it functions. The difference is that isochronic tones are individual tones that are spaced evenly, almost like a repetitive beat, rather than two tones working together. Just like binaural beats, the frequency-following effect occurs, and this helps aid various states of mental wellbeing.
